5 Tips For Dance Auditions

Audition day. For some of us this can be the most stressful and nervous day. I guess after a while this anxiety wears off and people just go through the motions as it becomes part of the routine in life. However, to have a great audition is important to jobs so, I believe, we need to start the day being prepared.

Auditioning has never got boring for me as it keeps life exciting. Dance auditions are part of our job and each one is so different we never know what it is going to be like. This is why that little nervous feeling at the bottom of my stomach never goes away. But think about it, the feeling of being nervous is so close to the feeling of excitement.

Dance Audition Tips

  1. Good Morning
It is so important that we start the day off with plenty of time. So if you know it is going to take you and hour and a half to get ready then set that alarm a little bit extra early. You never know where your hair is going to surprise you on a bad hair day… now that is the worst. Not only allow time to get ready without a rush you want to have a decent breakfast, something that will give you a huge energy boost. If you do run out of time at least grab a banana whilst you are on the run. You never know how long you are going to be at the audition for and may not get a chance to snack.
  2. Get there early
Ideally you want to be there with at least half an hour to spare. This way you can be in the first round of groups to perform and be seen. Especially if you have to que up outside for a while at a big auditions. Also you never know if you are going to get stuck in traffic or the tubeless are running slow. Also the earlier you get there the more time you are going to have to stretch and warm your self up. You can then relax and start to get into the zone.
  3. Get to the front
If you want to be seen easily, and if you want to see the choreographer you NEED to get to the front. Don’t let someone push in front of you, and if they do then move and get closer again to the front. You are going to want to have the best possible view of the choreographer to get the routine down correctly and the style that is needed.
  4. Stay focussed & use your etiquettes
Soon as you enter that auditon you need to have a clear mind, leave all your troubles and worries at the door. If your mind is focused it will be easier for you to concentrate on picking up the choreography and maintaining it. This way when it comes to performing it you don’t need to think so much about remember the choreography and your more free to perform and add the style. Also don’t forget your etiquettes. If you ask for help on a movement, make sure you ask polity… remember your pleases and thank yous. There is nothing worse than having a bad attitude and showing that to your potential employers. This is the way to not book a job.
  5. To flare or not flare
Sometimes it is hard to know if the choreographer is looking for individuality or for everyone to look the same. My advice would be to always go for it. Go all out. Give it everything all your energy and show your individuality. That is what is going to make you stand out and make you stick in the castings directors minds. You can always pull back a little on your flare but if you don’t give it your 100% the choreographer will think that you can’t give it more.

Remember, the next time you are auditioning, you’re not nervous, you’re excited.

Let me know what you think and if you have any other tips for an audition day. I would love to hear them. I hope I could help you out for your next audition.
